Crossing over is the genetic exchange of material between non-homologous sister chromatids.

Genetic Diversity and Crossing Over
Crossing over increases the genetic diversity within a population. How does it do this? By the constant rearrangement of allels being able to be inherited in any number of different methods.

Independent Assortment and Meiosis
Mendel's Law of Independent Assortment states that two different genes will be inherited independently of eachother. In theory this effectively holds true. That is until Linked genes were discovered (See Laws of Inheritance, 10.2 for more information)
What we now know, due to crossing over, is that for the majority of genes the Law of Independent assortment is correct. Crossing over causes a constant mixing of genes and the inheritance of which allele from which gene is independent of itself.
