Scientific Names
System for naming an organism is called Binomial Nomenclature. This system identifies all different species by a specific name. That name is based on specific characteristics of the organism and follows a set rule of "taxa" (See Taxonomy below).
- Each species is given two names ("binomial"):
- The genus (a more general name shared with a larger group of organisms) and
- The species (shared only by those organisms with the same features.
- The genus (a more general name shared with a larger group of organisms) and
To write a scientific name: Genus species
1. First word is the genus, second is species 2. Entire thing is either underlined (when printed) or italicized (when typed) 3. Genus is capitalized, species is not. example: Homo sapiens Importance of Scientific names:
1. Removes cross cultural and language barriers 2. Indicates specific traits and groupings about the organism 3. Makes sure you are always talking about the same organism 4. International recognition |
Taxonomy
Taxonomy is the classification of living organsisms based on their characteristics in increasing levels of specification. Taxon are the levels of classification given to an organsism. 8 Levels exist in increasingly specific areas of shared characteristics. The most general classification is Domain.

|
Make sure you know the taxa in order AND can classify two specific examples (one animal, one plant) from domain to species.
Domains
|
The three domains of life contain a variety of specific features that set them apart from each other.
